Wine of the Year Awards 2009 Hyatt Regency Adelaide has proudly hosted the annual South Australian Wine of the Year Awards, a nationally recognised event initiated by Hyatt Regency Adelaide in 1987, with The Advertiser becoming a co-sponsor in 1990.

The inspiration behind the establishment of the ‘Hyatt Wine Week’ in 2008, the event is open to all South Australian wineries. To qualify for entry, wineries must ensure their product is both produced and bottled within the State with an assurance that stock is readily available to consumers for purchase should the wine be a successful award winner.

Now in its 22nd year, the competition is the only event in Australia that allows consumers to make their own choices with a Consumer Judging Panel accompanying the expertise of a Professional Judging Panel. This consumer aspect is regarded by the public as highly as the winemakers’ tasting selections.

The Professional Judging panel consists of a mixture of professional wine judges and wine makers. These people are selected by our Chairman of Judges. Most of the judges are long standing on the panel, but generally this is
a changing panel. The Consumer Panel in the past has been collated from successful entrants in an Advertiser run essay competition prior to the judging day. Selections are made by The Advertiser, and the consumers enjoy an opportunity to participate in something unique.

In 2008, we received entries in the range of 1111 wines. The 2009 winners will be announced at a black tie gala dinner on Friday, 28 August. Attending guests will also experience an evening of magnificent food and entertainment and, of course an opportunity to taste some of the winning wines.
